Basil Smash


While basil and gin make the perfect pair (see: Green Park), you can make this delightful cocktail with vodka or a citrus-forward white rum. Try using a flavoured syrup for a twist -- I absolutely love green apple with this but strawberries or mango are wonderful, too!


50-60 ml Gin, vodka or white rum

10 ml Fresh lime or lemon juice

5 ml Rich syrup (2:1)

12-15 pc Fresh basil leaves

Jigger, muddler, bar spoon,

cocktail shaker, fine strainer

Serve in an Old Fashioned glass.

❶ Chill the glass.

❷ In a shaker and using muddler, gently but firmly press the basil against the base of the shaker.

❸ Add remaining ingredients. Quick stir and taste. If you want a bolder basil flavour, muddle again and/or add more herb.

❹ Prepare the chilled glass with a large block of ice.

❺ Fill the shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about 10-12 seconds.

❻ Double strain into the prepared glass.

❼ Garnish with 3-4 pieces of basil leaves.
